چکیده

In this paper we present and evaluate a hybrid-modular multiple access protocol for ATM transmission in a multiservice satellite system. Given appropriate synchronization and Doppler (shift) compensation, the protocol components can cope with the dynamics of the satellite constellation and are suitable to both mobile and fixed user environments. The general protocol framework is first given with an adaptive random-reservation protocol which can on principle support all ATM service classes over low earth orbit (LEO), medium earth orbit (MEO) and geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites while providing the required Quality of Service (QoS). In a second step, an optimized MAC protocol module for bandwidth-efficient support of rt-VBR traffic over LEO satellites is presented. The simulation based performance evaluation proves that the protocols allow to efficiently use statistical multiplexing of ATM traffic over the air interface, both for real-time and non-real-time bursty traffic.

Next Generation Multiservice Vsat Networks

Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite networks have so far been successful in the provision of specific communication services to geographically dispersed users. However, user demands are becoming more complex, and VSAT networks are expected to provide a much wider range of services (voice, data and multimedia). We investigate how this service integration could be achieved and show that...

A signaling architecture for wireless ATM access networks

A multiservice wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) access system is considered from a signaling protocol viewpoint. In an attempt to generalize and extend results and experiences obtained from the specification, design, and implementation of fixed ATM-based access networks, we extend the concept of the broadband V interface (referred to as VB) for application to wireless ATM access networ...

Dynamic Bandwidth Assignment Multiple Access for Efficient ATM-based Service Integration over LEO Satellite Systems

This paper proposes a novel dynamic bandwidth assignment multiple access (DBAMA) protocol employing a dynamic packet reservation technique for direct user terminal access to a ATM-based low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications system. Performance analyses by simulations are presented. Methods to efficiently integrate ATM-based BISDN traffic are considered.

ATM via satellite: A framework and implementation

This paper describes an ATM-based satellite network, focusing on the networking (ATM) aspects of the design. The ATM requirements and the basic design of the network are outlined. In particular, a simple MAC layer is proposed in which ATM service classes are mapped onto MF-TDMA uplink access methods. The uplink access and resource allocation approaches based on this model are described in detai...
